Patient Perspectives on Multiple Myeloma

Smart Patients and Clinical Care Options, LLC, are working together on a project about multiple myeloma. We want to help healthcare providers give individualized, evidence-based treatment while addressing health disparities.

Smart Patients has large communities for multiple myeloma patients. We asked them to share their views in an online survey about key challenges and unmet needs they face during treatment. Their answers will provide support for the medical education program of Clinical Care Options, LLC:

Smarter. Stronger. Together.
Optimizing Multiple Myeloma Care and
Addressing Health Disparities Through Education

Addressing these challenges together with an engaged healthcare team can lead to healthier, richer lives for multiple myeloma patients.

Patient Survey Results

The online patient community conducted a survey that garnered responses from 80 patients with multiple myeloma. This type of survey is valuable as it offers a patient's perspective that is not influenced by healthcare professionals. The survey participants spanned the range of the disease's progression, from earlier to later stages. Most respondents were from suburban areas, and their age distribution was similar to what is observed in clinical practice.

Key Takeaways:

  • Results of an online survey on treatment preferences revealed that efficacy is the most important factor for patients with multiple myeloma when selecting therapy.

  • Patients selected CAR T-cell therapy as their first choice, as it had the greatest efficacy with a 1-time administration, albeit coming with the significant challenges of necessary hospitalization, cell collection, and potentially serious adverse events.
